Understand dwelling, personal property, liability, additional living expense, deductibles, exclusions, and endorsements in homeowners insurance.
Dwelling and other structures
Dwelling coverage is intended for the insured home structure, while other-structures coverage may address items such as a detached garage or fence. The limit should reflect rebuilding cost, not simply market value.
Personal property
Personal property coverage can help with covered damage or theft of belongings, subject to limits, deductibles, and exclusions. High-value jewelry, collectibles, cameras, or instruments may need scheduled coverage and proof of ownership.
Liability and medical payments
Personal liability coverage may respond when you are legally responsible for injury or property damage. Medical-payments coverage is different and may pay certain minor injuries regardless of fault, subject to policy terms.
Additional living expenses
If a covered loss makes the home unlivable, additional living expense coverage may help with reasonable temporary housing and related costs. Keep receipts and follow the insurer’s instructions.
Common gaps
Flood, earthquake, wear and tear, maintenance issues, and certain water losses may not be covered by a standard policy. Ask about endorsements, separate policies, replacement-cost options, and the effect of your deductible.
