Follow this insurance claims checklist after property, auto, travel, or other insured losses to preserve records and communicate clearly.
Protect people first
Seek medical help and make the area safe. Call emergency services when appropriate. Do not take risks to collect evidence or property.
Prevent further damage
Take reasonable steps allowed by the policy to prevent worsening damage, such as temporary repairs. Keep receipts and photograph conditions before and after emergency work.
Notify promptly
Report the loss through the insurer’s official channel and record the claim number, date, adjuster, and next steps. Late notice can create complications under policy conditions.
Document thoroughly
Take photos and video, list damaged items, gather receipts, and preserve relevant reports. Do not discard damaged property until the insurer advises unless it creates a safety hazard.
Review before settlement
Read the settlement explanation and ask questions about depreciation, limits, deductibles, and excluded items. Use the appeal or complaint process if the result does not match the policy.
